Operation Smile brought me the gratifying opportunity of attending its annual Residents Leadership Conference in its home country, USA. The gathering of over 60 residents and fellows of a wide range of specialties from all over the world took place in the beautiful city of Virginia Beach, where all participants met up for sharing and learning together how Operation Smile’s contribution helps children with cleft lips and cleft palates worldwide. It was a short but memorable event. The comprehensive schedule embraced a number of practical ideas. We had a great chance to meet the chairman, Dr. Bill Magee and other key persons. I was so impressed with their positive thinking, interesting backgrounds and proficient concept of administration. The ice breaking section was pleasurable and very efficient. We quickly got to know all our new colleagues by the name game within the first hour. After that, we learned how Operation Smile formed, its core values and valuable experiences from several regional centers.
On the second day, we were set apart into 3 groups of plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists and pediatricians to receive specialized lectures by many experts from various institutes. Indeed, it was very gainful and practicable. We also had a small and warm party at the Magee’s riverside residence. It strengthened our friendship and made us feel united as a group of charitable people with no frontier. From this event, I have made a lot of connections either in anesthesia practices or other specialties from different parts of the world. It will be, more or less, beneficial for my future career path.\n\nAt last, this impressive meeting has reinforced my confidence of the positive impact to those children in need through volunteering in this medical charity network. My deepest gratitude goes to Operation Smile for supporting me throughout this conference, empowering my inspiration to help people and bringing all volunteers contributions to the world.
